High-speed train at a station platform in Morocco, the fastest way to travel between major cities

Morocco is easy to cross by train, coach and ferry once you know which one fits each leg. This guide gives the times and prices we found on the official booking sites, route by route. For a full plan see the Morocco itinerary and, for budgets, the Morocco travel cost guide.

Trains

The ONCF network covers the spine of the country: Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, Casablanca, then Marrakech or Fes. Al Boraq, the fast train between Tangier and Casablanca, ran hourly on our search and most departures showed limited seats. The ordinary Al Atlas trains on the other lines are slower, though they run often.

Some pairs are close to a flat price. Marrakech to Fes was 260 DH in 2nd class on nearly every departure. Others move a lot. Casablanca to Fes was 59 to 130 DH depending on the train, and Tangier to Casablanca showed 1st class from 199 to 365 DH. Do not assume 1st class always costs more. Details for the two busiest lines are in the Casablanca to Marrakech train guide and the Marrakech to Fes train guide.

One practical catch: the same city can have two stations. In Casablanca, check that your ticket says Casa Voyageurs.

Buses and coaches

Two companies matter for visitors. CTM is independent. Supratours is ONCF’s coach subsidiary, so its coaches connect with the train network.

On Marrakech to Agadir we saw 9 CTM departures (135 to 170 DH, 2h50 to 3h30) and 11 Supratours departures (135 to 150 DH, about 3h30 to 3h45). On Marrakech to Essaouira, Supratours ran 6 coaches a day at 100 to 125 DH, while CTM showed a single 08:30 at 105 DH.

Fes to Chefchaouen is the one to choose carefully. CTM had 4 departures at a flat 145 DH, taking 4h10 to 4h50. Supratours had two a day at 255 to 275 DH and 6h32. Book the CTM.

Places the train does not reach

There is no train to Essaouira, Agadir or Chefchaouen. ONCF’s site will still sell you the trip as one ticket, with a train leg followed by a coach. On our search, Casablanca to Essaouira was 220 to 235 DH (6h17 to 6h54 in total), Casablanca to Agadir 255 to 270 DH (about 6h50) and Casablanca to Chefchaouen 265 DH (5h07, two departures a day). That is useful when you are coming from the airport, less so when you start in Marrakech, where a direct coach is simpler.

Ferries from Spain

The ferry business has moved. DFDS, which absorbed FRS, now lists only Algeciras to Tanger Med: 30 minutes, 36 EUR on foot, 205 EUR with a car on the day we checked. Balearia sails the same route for 33 EUR on foot and 178.50 EUR with a car. The Tarifa to Tangier Ville crossing is now Balearia’s fast ferry, about an hour, 38 EUR on foot, four sailings from 09:00 to 21:00. Tangier Med is a separate port outside Tangier city, so confirm which port you land at. More in the Tangier to Spain ferry guide.

Taxis in cities

Petit taxis are the small city cabs, one colour per city, for rides inside town. Ask for the meter (the compteur). If the driver refuses, agree the price before you get in. We did not find an official tariff table online, so we do not quote fares here. For the airport run in Marrakech, see the airport to medina guide.

Grand taxis are shared cars between nearby towns, usually paid per seat. Agree the fare before you leave, and confirm whether you pay for a seat or the whole car.

Driving yourself

A rental car makes sense on the coast south of Essaouira and for desert routes, and less inside a medina city, where parking is hard. The long Sahara drives are covered in the Marrakech to Merzouga road trip and the Morocco road trip guide.
