Tangier Travel Guide: Morocco’s Northern Gateway

Tangier Travel Guide: The Northern Gatewy, Planned Well

Tangier is where the ferry, the fast train and the northern coaches meet. This guide gives the airport taxi fares, the train and ferry prices and the onward routes, using official sources. For budgets see the Morocco travel cost guide.

Sources checked 2026-10-23: ONDA’s official taxi tariff for Tangier Ibn Battouta airport, live searches on oncf-voyages.ma, ctm.ma, dfds.com and balearia.com for Wednesday 4 November 2026 (1 adult), and the Tanger Med port site. We found no official ticketing page for the Kasbah Museum or other Tangier sights, so we give no entry prices.

From the airport

Tangier Ibn Battouta has a taxi tariff published by ONDA, the airports authority. We found no bus listed on the airport’s page, so taxi is the confirmed option. Fixed fares, day (05:30 to 22:30) and night (22:30 to 05:30):

By ferry from Spain

A ferry approaching the port of Tangier

The crossing to Tangier Ville is run by Balearia from Tarifa: about an hour, 38 EUR on foot, four sailings from 09:00 to 21:00 on the date we checked. The cheaper and more frequent routes go from Algeciras to Tanger Med, which is a separate port outside the city. Fares, car prices and entry rules are in our Tangier to Spain ferry guide.

By train

Al Boraq links Tangier Ville to Casa Voyageurs in 2h17, hourly from 06:00, with 2nd class at 190 to 225 DH on our search. Most departures showed limited seats. A slower route with a change also exists and was cheaper at 125 to 157 DH, taking 5h54 to 7h13. To Rabat there is no direct Al Boraq: you change at Kenitra, 1h44 to 1h56, 150 to 160 DH. The full table of times is in getting around Morocco.

Onward by coach

CTM runs Tangier to Chefchaouen five times a day (07:45, 09:00, 10:15, 12:15, 16:00), taking 2h15 to 2h35 at a flat 85 DH. That makes Tangier the usual starting point for the blue city. See the Chefchaouen travel guide.

Coaches from Tangier

CTM’s network from Tangier covers more than Chefchaouen. On the date we searched:

ToDeparturesTimePrice
Tetouan6 a day, 07:45 to 16:301h to 1h1530 to 35 DH
Rabat (bus station)3 a day: 08:00, 11:00, 16:453h35 to 4h140 DH
Fes (direct)evenings 18:30, 20:30, 23:59, plus daytimeabout 6h at night, 7h15 to 7h45 by day190 to 195 DH

For Rabat the train is faster, with a change at Kenitra. CTM does not sell tickets to Asilah (we typed it into the booking search and got no result), so Asilah is a taxi or local transport trip.

Tetouan nearby

UNESCO inscribed the Medina of Tetouan in 1997 (listing 837, 6.5 hectares). It says the town served from the 8th century as the main point of contact between Morocco and Andalusia, and was rebuilt by Andalusian refugees after the Reconquest, and that Tetouan is the most complete of the smaller Moroccan medinas. The Ministry of Culture’s ticket portal lists two sites in the area: Dar Sanaa, the crafts school founded in 1919 (60 DH for a foreign adult, 30 DH for a child aged 7 to 13), and the Tamuda archaeological site, 5 km southwest of Tetouan (80 DH for a foreign adult, 40 DH for a child). The medina itself has no single ticket.

Flights

ONDA’s arrivals board for Tangier Ibn Battouta on 23 October 2026 showed flights from Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, and from Marrakech, but none from the UK that day. That is a one-day snapshot, so check the airline for your date.

Where to spend your time

Tangier works as a one-night stop on the way in or out. The old medina and the kasbah sit above the port, and the city looks across to Spain on a clear day. A day is enough for the medina and the waterfront, and if you have more time, Asilah is an easy add-on (ONDA lists a 200 DH taxi fare from the airport). See the Morocco itinerary for how the north fits with the rest of a trip.
