Getting Around Marrakech: Taxis, Buses and Walking

Getting around Marrakech is mostly a mix of walking in the medina and short taxi rides between districts. This guide explains how petit taxis and grand taxis work, what the airport page and the press say about fares, what changed on the city buses, and how to avoid overpaying. For the city itself, see the Marrakech travel guide.
Sources checked 24 October to 5 November 2026: the airport operator’s taxi and bus page, a legal analysis of taxi rules, press reports on fares and licences, and a report on the bus operator change. No official tariff table is published online for Marrakech, so fares below are reported, not guaranteed. Ask for the meter and confirm prices before you go.
Getting around Marrakech at a glance
| Option | Suits | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | The medina, souks, Jemaa el-Fna | Many lanes are too narrow for cars |
| Petit taxi | Short trips inside the city | Up to 3 passengers, ask for the meter |
| Grand taxi | Airport, groups, longer trips | Whole-car fares, up to 6 seats |
| Airport shuttle bus | Airport to the city | One bus about every 20 minutes (airport page) |
| City bus | Budget trips | Operator changed in December 2025, check fares |
The catch is that fares are set locally and few are posted, so the same ride can cost different amounts. A little preparation avoids most arguments.

Walking in the medina and between districts
Most of what visitors want sits inside or around the medina. Lanes are busy with scooters, bikes and carts, so keep to one side and listen for warnings. A taxi can drop you at a gate, and you walk the last stretch to a riad. Ask your riad how to reach it, because drivers often cannot enter the lanes. This is general practical advice rather than a sourced rule.
Distances between the medina and the new town of Gueliz are short by taxi but long on foot in the heat, so plan one or the other for each part of the day. For haggling in the souks, see Bargaining in Morocco.

Petit taxis: how they work and what they cost
Petit taxis take up to 3 passengers and are meant for trips within the city. Fares are set locally, and a legal analysis notes there is no national grid. It reports no published meter tariff for Marrakech. Ask the driver to switch on the meter before you start. If the driver refuses and names a price, you can step out and flag another.
- Reported airport fare: a press report cites a regional official saying a petit taxi from the airport to the centre costs 70 DH, and up to 100 DH to the Palmeraie. The article is undated.
- A legal analysis says airport flat fares run from 80 to 160 DH depending on distance and time, from a provincial decision in April 2023. The two sources differ, so confirm on the day.
- Night surcharge: a 50 percent surcharge is widely reported on blogs, but we found no official source, so treat it as unconfirmed.
- The same press report says authorities withdrew 46 taxi licences for overcharging, which shows the problem exists.
Our advice: use the meter for city rides, agree a flat price in advance only when there is no meter, and have small notes ready, because drivers often say they have no change.
Grand taxis and airport transfers
Grand taxis are larger cream or beige Mercedes sedans with 6 seats, used for the airport and intercity runs. The same press report cites a grand taxi from the airport to the centre at 100 DH and up to 150 DH to the Palmeraie. The airport’s own page says the taxi station is on the arrivals esplanade, with fares posted at the Parking Taxi for each destination, so check the board there. We could not find the fares online.

Buses in Marrakech
The airport operator says a shuttle bus runs between the city and the airport about every 20 minutes. It does not name the line or give a fare. Travel sites call it line 19 and quote 30 DH, but a December 2025 report says the urban and suburban bus network passed from ALSA to Supratours. The same report says fares were held at 5 MAD only until the end of the Africa Cup of Nations. We found no official fare page for the new operator, so check the current price with the driver.
For daily use, city buses are cheaper than taxis but less direct, and the network is hard to read for first-time visitors. A taxi usually fits short stays, and a bus suits longer stays on a budget.
Tips to avoid overpaying
- Ask for the meter in a petit taxi before you get in.
- Know the rough airport fare from the sources above, and check the posted board.
- Do not accept a ride from someone who approaches you at the arrivals hall without checking the taxi station first.
- Carry small notes for fares and tips.
- Plan big day trips with a licensed operator, see day trips from Marrakech.
- Compare costs with Morocco travel cost.

Do Marrakech taxis use a meter?
Petit taxis are supposed to. Ask the driver to start it, and agree a price in advance only when the driver refuses.
Is there a bus from Marrakech airport?
