Ouzoud waterfalls

About 150 to 160 km, 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Entry is free, with small costs for parking, a guide and the boat. Tours are listed at about 21 to 26 USD per adult. The nearest town with CTM service is Beni Mellal (two coaches a day, 85 MAD), and you still need a taxi from there, so a tour or car is simpler.

Ourika Valley

Setti Fatma has 7 waterfalls, the first two easy. Shared taxis are reported at around 30 MAD per person. The Monday market at Tnine de l’Ourika is a morning stop. Marketplace tours run from roughly 13 to 74 USD per adult for shared trips, with private versions costing much more.

Agafay desert

About 30 km south, 40 minutes by car. Rocky, not dunes. Camel rides from about 30 EUR, quad bikes from about 45 EUR. The Marrakech tourism office lists one camp with a day pass at 550 MAD and a sunset pass at 650 MAD per person, but that offer was valid only until 31 August 2026, so treat it as an indication and check current price.

Essaouira

About 3 hours by coach. Official fares for 4 November 2026: Supratours runs six direct coaches a day at 100 to 125 MAD, and CTM has one at 08:30 for 105 MAD. The medina has been on the UNESCO list since 2001. A day trip is long, so stay a night if you can.

Ait Ben Haddou

The earthen ksar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1987). Sources give 185 to 210 km from Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka pass and 3.5 to 4 hours each way. Public transport is limited and connections can be unreliable. One listing shows about two vans a day at around 32 USD, so most visitors go by tour, private driver or car. A guide says you need 2 to 3 hours inside the ksar. Sources disagree on entry: reports range from 5 to 30 MAD, with about 10 MAD a common figure, and local guided visits ask for a voluntary contribution. Check on site. It is a full day with about 8 hours of driving.

Ouarzazate

The coach is the one practical public-transport option in this list for the south. CTM runs four departures (00:30, 10:15, 11:30, 16:15), taking 4 h 15 to 4 h 45, for 115 MAD flat. The 00:30 is a night coach, so for a day return, check that the last return fits. Ouarzazate works better as an overnight stop on the way to the desert than as a day trip.

Booking a tour

Marketplace listings dominate the search results, and we found few operator-owned sites, so prices vary. Before you pay, ask what the price covers:

  • Is the pickup from your riad or a meeting point?
  • Are entry fees, the boat at Ouzoud, lunch and the camel ride included?
  • How many people share the vehicle, and what time do you get back?
  • What is the cancellation policy?

Official Canadian advice for southern Morocco is to hire only guides recommended by hotels, travel agencies or the tourist authorities.

Which to choose

Pick by how much time you have. Agafay and Ourika are half-day or short-day trips. Ouzoud, Essaouira and Ait Ben Haddou each take most of a day on the road. If you only have one spare day, Essaouira is the easiest to do alone because the coaches are frequent and the fare is official.

The downside: Ouzoud and Essaouira are each 5 to 6 hours of travel, and Ait Ben Haddou is about 8, so pick one long trip and one short one.
