Romantic Things to Do in Morocco: A Couples Guide

Romantic things to do in Morocco mostly come down to four settings: a riad with a candlelit courtyard, a hammam, a sunrise from a hot air balloon and a night in a desert camp. This guide lists each one with reported costs from our own price guides, then adds what couples should know about hotel check-in, public affection and the law. For the full route, see the Morocco itinerary.
Sources checked on 6 November 2026: our own Marrakech price guides (hammam, balloon, riads, Sahara), the UK government’s Morocco travel advice and a Hespress report on hotel rules. Prices are reported ranges, not offers, and 11 MAD is roughly 1 EUR. Confirm every price before you book.

The catch is that Morocco is a conservative country, so the romance is in the settings rather than in public affection. More on that further down.

A riad with a candlelit courtyard
A riad is a house built around an inner courtyard, often with a small pool or fountain, orange trees and carved plaster. Many offer rooftop terraces and dinner in the courtyard, which is the easiest way to get a quiet evening in a busy medina. Our Marrakech riads guide reports mid-range doubles at about 600 to 2,000 MAD a night, with breakfast usually included.
- Ask whether dinner can be served in the courtyard or on the roof, and whether it costs extra.
- Cars cannot reach most riads, so ask your host to arrange a pickup from the nearest gate.
- Lanes can feel quiet at night. Ask for walking directions in advance.
The downside is noise. Some riads sit beside a mosque or a busy lane, so read recent reviews about sleep before you pay.
A hammam for two
A traditional public hammam is usually separated by gender, so a couple will not share it. Many riads and spas offer private sessions instead. Our Marrakech hammam guide reports about 250 to 450 MAD at spa hammams, with higher prices in private spas. Ask for the private room and what is included, such as a scrub, a rhassoul mask or a massage.
One search summary mentions a private-session hammam designed for couples at a Marrakech resort. We could not verify it, so ask each venue directly whether a couples session exists.

Hot air balloon at sunrise
Flights leave from the palm grove outside Marrakech at dawn, with the High Atlas on the horizon when the sky is clear. Our hot air balloon guide reports standard flights at about 600 to 744 MAD on GetYourGuide (checked 24 October 2026), and the same guide notes much higher prices at other booking sites. Compare what is included, such as breakfast and hotel pickup.
Dawn departures mean pickup before sunrise, and wind can cancel a flight, so keep a spare morning in your plan. Cold mornings are common in winter, so bring layers.

A night in a desert camp
A desert camp is the most-recommended romantic stop in the guides we read. Merzouga and Erg Chigaga have real dunes but need a long drive. Agafay, closer to Marrakech, is a stony desert that fits a one-night trip. See Merzouga vs Erg Chigaga and the Agafay desert guide to choose.
- Our Sahara guide reports camp-only stays of about 600 to 1,200 MAD per person, and shared tours priced much higher.
- One guide mentions a private camp upgrade with a separate tent and private dinner, listed at about 1,200 to 2,000 MAD per couple. We could not verify it.
- Nights can be cold in winter and hot in summer, see Morocco weather.
Check the tent heating, bedding and toilets in the listing, because standards vary widely between camps.
Essaouira and the coast
Essaouira has white and blue walls, ramparts with old cannons and fishing boats in the port. A walk on the ramparts at sunset costs nothing, and the wind keeps the evening cool. One guide calls it Morocco’s most romantic coastal escape, but gives few details, so treat that as an opinion. See the Essaouira guide for how to get there and where to eat.
Couples, hotels and the law
A few rules matter more for couples than for solo travellers. The UK government advises avoiding public displays of affection in tourist areas and near religious sites, and notes that same-sex relations are illegal in Morocco. LGBT+ couples should read that advice before they travel.
On unmarried couples, Hespress reported on 27 May 2024 that security services gave hotels verbal guidance ending marriage-contract requirements, though the practice remains largely verbal and a police registration form is still required. The same report says Article 490 of the penal code, which criminalises sexual relations outside marriage, is still in force. Enforcement against foreign tourists appears limited in the reports we found, but rules vary by hotel and staff. Confirm the hotel’s check-in policy in writing before you arrive, and bring passports for both of you.
