Agafay Desert: A Complete Guide from Marrakech

Travel guidePublished Last checked 6 min read
Agafay desert camp at sunset with the snow-capped High Atlas behind

Agafay is the closest desert landscape to Marrakech, about 30 km south, roughly 40 minutes by car. It is rocky and gravelly, not a sand-dune desert like the Sahara, with low stony hills, open views toward the Atlas and camps scattered across the plateau. Most visitors go for a few hours in the evening: a camel ride, maybe a quad bike, dinner in a tent and a show. Prices below come from tour-booking sites and may differ today, so check current price.

What to expect

You will drive out of the city, leave the palm groves behind and reach a flat, stony landscape. Camps range from simple tents to chalets and cabins with pools. Most trips are half-day or evening outings of about 5 to 6 hours, including transfer.

The downside: it is a managed tourist experience. Do not expect silence or a remote feeling, especially at sunset when several camps run their programmes at the same time. If you want real dunes, you need the Sahara, see the Merzouga guide.

Prices on Expedia and Travelocity

Listings for an evening with quad, camel and dinner ran from about 40 to 53 USD per adult. One tour is 40 USD for a 1-hour quad ride (a two-person quad) and a 20-minute camel ride, with tips and soft drinks extra. Another operator lists 46 to 47 USD for a 5-hour version starting at 16:00, with checkout totals of about 47 USD for the camel option and 52 to 53 USD for the quad option. A third booking site shows 104 USD per person for a camel caravan, quad ride and Berber tent dinner. The gap is large, so compare minutes on the quad, whether dinner is included, and whether the quad is shared.

Overnight or an evening visit

Camps in the hills offer tents, chalets and cabins. Several sources say the desert is more memorable if you stay the night, or at least have dinner in a tent. We found no reliable overnight prices, so ask the camp directly and compare two or three. If you only have one evening, a sunset dinner trip fits easily between a morning in the medina and a late night.

Best time to go

Guides put spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) as the best windows, when days and nights are pleasant. Summer is a poor choice, temperatures can exceed 40 degrees C. In winter the days are mild but the nights are very cold, down to 0 degrees C in one source.

What to wear

Evenings cool down quickly even after a warm day, especially from October to April.

  • A light jacket, fleece or long cardigan for dinner
  • Closed shoes with grip, sandals do not grip dune paths or loose stones
  • A scarf, handy for dust and sun
  • Long sleeves and trousers if you ride a quad, many visitors wear them against dust and sun

Choosing a camp or tour

  • Ask for the exact transfer time from your riad or hotel and the return time.

  • Check the cancellation policy, in case of wind or cold.

Agafay or the Sahara

Agafay is a few hours. The Sahara is days. For a first evening outside the city, Agafay is easy. If you want large dunes and a real night in the desert, see the 3-day Merzouga guide and the Chigaga comparison.
