Getting there from Marrakech

Ouzoud is about 150 to 160 km from Marrakech, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car depending on traffic. Guides suggest the N8 towards Beni Mellal, then the R208.

  • Parking: 10 to 20 MAD
  • Local guide: 30 to 50 MAD per person
  • Boat ride to the base of the falls: about 20 MAD per person

The downside: the main path is lined with cafés and stalls, and it gets busy at weekends.

Neither CTM nor Supratours serves Azilal, and Markoub lists no Marrakech to Azilal coach. The nearest served town is Beni Mellal: CTM runs two coaches (07:30 and 13:15, 3 h 35 to 3 h 45, 85 MAD flat) for 2026-11-04, and Markoub lists 70 to 80 MAD, 174 km. From there you still need a taxi to the falls, so a tour or a car is simpler.

What to do at the falls

Walk down the stepped path beside the falls, stop at the viewpoints, and take the optional boat ride. Wear shoes with grip, the steps are wet. Many visitors also see the Barbary macaques that live near the path, so keep food in your bag.

When to go and how long to stay

Water flow changes with the seasons, so check recent photos before you pick a date. A day trip from Marrakech works but leaves you with about 6 hours of driving. If that sounds too long, sleep in the village and see the falls early the next morning.

The walk and the macaques

Tour listings describe a hike of about 1.5 hours through the gorge, with the three-tiered cascades and the main drop quoted at around 110 metres. The path is wet stone steps and uneven rock, so wear closed shoes with grip. Barbary macaques live in the olive groves around the falls. Frommer’s calls them cheeky, and guides say not to feed them, so keep food and phones in your bag.

Season and light

Spring is described as the best season, with wildflowers, milder hiking weather and the falls at full flow. Frommer’s says the best photos come in the mid to late afternoon, when the rainbows are widest. We found no detailed water-flow data by month, so check recent visitor photos before you pick a date.

Public transport near the falls

Once you reach Azilal or Demnate, buses and grands taxis run through the day on the roads between Demnate, Ouzoud and Azilal, per one guide. Prices are not listed, so agree the fare before you get in.

Staying overnight

Frommer’s names the Riad Cascades d’Ouzoud as the best of the hotels within spray range, with nine en suite rooms and doubles listed at 710 to 1,050 MAD. That listing is dated, so confirm the current rate and contact details directly. A night means you can see the falls early, before the tour groups arrive.

The bus day trip, step by step

Using the CTM timetable we checked for 4 November 2026: the 07:30 coach to Beni Mellal takes 3 h 35 to 3 h 45, so you arrive at about 11:05 to 11:15, for 85 MAD. A second coach leaves at 13:15. From Beni Mellal you still need a taxi to the falls, and we found no official taxi fare or return timetable.

That makes a same-day return by bus hard to promise. If you want the falls without a car, a tour or a night in the village is the safer plan.

Rough budget for the day

If you go by car, the extras add up to about 60 to 90 MAD per person: parking 10 to 20, a guide 30 to 50 and the boat about 20 (our sum of the reported ranges, not a quoted total). Add fuel and tolls, see the road trip guide. A shared tour at about 21 to 26 USD per adult includes the transport, so compare it with a rental car split between passengers.

A simple plan for the day

1. Leave Marrakech by 7:00 to reach the falls around 10:00.

2. Walk down the stepped path first, before it gets crowded.

3. Take the boat at the base only if the queue is short.

4. Eat after the walk, and agree the price of grilled meat before ordering.

5. Start the drive back by 16:30 so you are not on the road after dark.
