Ourika Valley from Marrakech: How to Get There, What to See and Tips

Travel guidePublished Last checked 6 min read
Ourika Valley from Marrakech, river and clay villages in the High Atlas foothills

The Ourika Valley is the easiest mountain escape from Marrakech. It runs up into the High Atlas, with Berber villages on the slopes, small riverside restaurants and, at the top, the village of Setti Fatma and its waterfalls. Sources give 30 to 65 km from Marrakech depending on where they start counting, and one tour operator puts the valley 60 km south of the city. Plan about 1 to 2 hours each way, longer at weekends. Prices below come from old forum posts, tour operators and booking sites, so check current price.

Getting there

There are three realistic ways: a shared grand taxi, a private taxi, or a tour.

OptionReported costNotes
Shared grand taxiunder 2 EUR per person, one visitor recalled 30 MADLeaves when full, you may wait
Private taxi for the dayabout 800 MAD (older forum post)You pay for all 6 seats
Small minivan tour55 EUR for 2 adults (one quote)Includes the driver for the whole day
Group day tourtypically 5 to 8 hoursOften adds an argan cooperative and tea in a Berber home

Shared taxis are the cheapest by far. The catch is that nothing is fixed: the fare, the departure time and where you get dropped all depend on the driver. If you want a private taxi, agree the total price and the waiting time before you get in, and say whether you want to stop at Tnine de l’Ourika on the way.

Tour prices on booking sites

Listings on Expedia and Travelocity show a shared day trip at about 16 to 17 USD per adult, running 6 to 7.5 hours with hotel pickup, a driver and a local guide, lunch not included. Guided versions with lunch and the Setti Fatma hike run about 8 hours. Private versions cost several times more. Most listings start around 9:00 and last 7 to 9 hours. These are marketplace prices, not an operator tariff, so check current price.

GetYourGuide listings

On GetYourGuide (checked 24 October 2026), 7-hour Ourika day trips with pickup, a guide and lunch run about 96 to 180 MAD per person, for example 151 MAD (4.9 from 26,413 reviews), 128 MAD for an 8-hour trip with a private option, and 96 MAD with a waterfall hike (4.9, 5,692 reviews). The cheapest listing is 55 MAD, and an evening trip with dinner is 163 MAD. These are low “from” prices with a discount against a higher list price, and the operators are not shown on the search cards, so check what is included and check current price.

Choosing how to go, side by side

WayReported costTimeBest for

The shared taxi is the cheapest, but it is also the least predictable. For a day on a tight schedule, a tour or a private taxi with the price agreed before you set off removes the guesswork.

Setti Fatma and the waterfalls

Setti Fatma is the last village you can reach by road and the starting point for the waterfall walk. There are 7 waterfalls strung along the stream above the village. Sources describe the walk very differently, which is useful to know before you set off. One tour operator lists a 1.5 hour hike from the village. Another estimates about 3 hours round trip if you do not stop. A guided itinerary sets aside 2 hours. A trekking operator says the climb is about 300 metres up a narrow valley.

The reason for the spread is simple: the first two falls are easy and close to the village, so many people stop there and call it a day. The other five need a good level of fitness and some scrambling on rocks. Decide before you start how far you want to go, and turn back if the rocks are wet.

The downside: the trail is busy and local guides will approach you at the start. Visitors say you do not need one on the main path, so a polite no is enough. If you do want a guide for the upper falls, agree the price before you walk.

The Monday market

Tnine de l’Ourika, on the way up, holds a traditional souk on Mondays. If you are going on a Monday, stop in the morning, look around, then continue by taxi to Setti Fatma. On other days the village is quiet, so do not plan around the market unless the day matches.

Eating

The valley has small restaurants by the river and near the waterfall trail. Prices are not listed anywhere we could verify, so look at the menu board first and ask the total before ordering grilled meat or tagine. Many visitors bring water and a snack for the hike and eat after.

What to bring

  • Shoes with grip, the rocks near the falls are slippery
  • A layer, it is cooler in the valley than in Marrakech
  • Small bills for the taxi, tips and snacks
  • Water and sun protection

When to go

Visitors recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds, and avoiding weekends if you dislike crowds. One source suggests early March for blossoming trees in the valley. Water flow changes through the year, so look at recent photos before you choose a date.
