Mount Toubkal Trek: Route, Guide Rules and When to Go

Travel guidePublished Last checked 6 min read
Rocky High Atlas valley with a trail leading toward a snow-dusted summit

The Toubkal trek is the classic hike in the High Atlas: a 4,167 m summit about 1.5 hours by road from Marrakech, usually done in two days from the village of Imlil. This guide covers the route and hours, the refuges, the guide rules, what it costs and when to go. If you are still planning the wider trip, start with the Marrakech travel guide and the Morocco itinerary.

Sources checked 5 November 2026: tour operator pages, trekking guides, a mountain-hut listing and travel magazines. We found no official park page with fixed numbers, and sources differ on hours, prices and how strictly the guide rule is enforced, so we give ranges and say where they come from. Ask a licensed operator before you go.

The route, day by day

Day 1: Imlil to the refuge

You start in Imlil at about 1,740 m, usually with a guide and a muleteer who takes the heavy bags on a mule. The path climbs steadily through the village of Aroumd and up the valley to the Neltner refuge. One guide describes the climb to the refuge as well over 1,000 m of ascent, and operators give 5 to 7 hours depending on the group. A route listing for Imlil to the neighbouring Mouflons refuge gives 12.4 km and 1,430 m of ascent.

Day 2: the summit and back down

Most groups leave early, because the summit day is long: typically 7 to 8 hours round trip, with the descent to Imlil afterwards. The upper section is rocky and steep. Longer itineraries of three or four days add valleys or villages, and exist for people who want a slower pace.

Guide rules for the Toubkal trek

Several sources say that, since 2019, foreign climbers on the Imlil to Toubkal route must go with a licensed local guide, a rule linked to the December 2018 killing of two hikers near Imlil. Sources disagree on how strictly it is enforced: one says checkpoints verify credentials, another says enforcement is inconsistent and that independent trekkers do try. Going without a guide is described as discouraged and risky, especially outside summer.

Our advice is simple: book a licensed guide, ask to see the licence, and confirm the current rule before you travel, because it has changed before. Groups of six or more may need two guides, according to one source. For the safety side of travelling in the country, see the Morocco travel tips.

Refuges and where to sleep

Two huts make up the base camp: the CAF’s Neltner refuge at about 3,207 m and the privately owned Mouflons refuge just below. One source says both operate year-round. Neltner is described as often crowded, especially at weekends, so book ahead and expect shared dormitories. Many operators include the refuge in a package, and independent bookings are usually made through the refuge or an Imlil guesthouse.

In Imlil and the nearby villages there are guesthouses for the night before and after. If you arrive from Marrakech by taxi or shared transport, see Getting around Morocco and the Marrakech airport to the medina guide.

What a Toubkal trek costs

Costs vary by season, group size and operator, and published figures come mostly from tour sites. For the guide alone, sources quote about 400 to 600 MAD per day at Imlil, about 600 to 800 MAD per day in a 2024 day-trip listing, and about 50 EUR per day elsewhere. Add the refuge bed and meals, the mule, and transport to Imlil.

  • A guided 2-day package from Marrakech is sold by several operators, check what the price includes (guide, mule, meals, refuge, transfer).
  • Budget for tips for the guide and muleteer, which are customary.
  • Compare prices with the general costs in Morocco travel cost.

When to go and what to bring

One source says pockets of snow remain above 3,000 m from early July and by the end of August all snow may be gone, so summer is the simplest season for most people. Winter climbs exist, but they are guided and use winter gear. Weather in the mountains changes quickly, so check a forecast and ask your guide.

  • Hiking boots that are already worn in, and warm layers, since it can be cold at the refuge.
  • A sun hat, sunscreen and at least 2 litres of water per day for the walk.
  • A headlamp for the early start, and snacks.
  • In winter, ask the operator about crampons and an ice axe.

At this altitude some people feel headaches or nausea. Go up slowly, drink water, and tell your guide if you feel unwell. If you are not sure about your fitness, ask a doctor before booking. A calmer alternative is a lower valley walk in the High Atlas, which several operators also offer.
