Best Restaurants in Marrakech: What to Eat and What It Costs

This page covers price levels, dishes and a few places guides keep mentioning, not a ranked list. Figures come from several food guides and differ, so check current price and menus before you go.

Jemaa el-Fna stalls

Guides put a stall meal at 20 to 80 MAD per person, and one says a full street-food meal rarely passes 60 MAD if you eat where locals eat. Prices at stalls are fixed, but tourists may be quoted higher, so ask before ordering and carry small bills. Harira soup and grilled meat are the easy places to start.

The square itself is recognised by UNESCO: it was proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001 and inscribed on the Representative List in 2008. The listing protects the storytellers, musicians and food culture, not the buildings, which is why the stalls and performers are part of the point of going.

The downside: the square is loud, smoky and full of touts calling you to their table. Choose a busy stall with local customers and check the price board before you sit.

Medina restaurants

  • Snack restaurants: 30 to 60 MAD for a full meal
  • A decent medina restaurant: 50 to 100 MAD for a tagine
  • Tanjia at local restaurants: around 80 to 150 MAD per portion

Tanjia is a lamb dish cooked slowly in a clay urn, a Marrakech speciality. Guides name Le Jardin and La Fontaine des Épices for it. One guide says to arrive at Le Jardin before 13:00 for lunch because it does not take reservations, and one reviewer found prices high, especially for the salad.

Nomad: official menu prices

Nomad publishes its menu in dirhams (nomadmarrakech.com, checked 24 October 2026), and adds a 9 percent service charge. Starters run from 80 MAD (seasonal soup) to 160 MAD (tuna tartare), with a sardine tart at 90 MAD. Mains: aubergine 130 MAD, sardine kofta 160 MAD, cauliflower 160 MAD, chicken, calamari and burger 180 MAD, fish of the day 210 MAD, lamb chops 220 MAD, and lamb confit or beef with prunes 240 MAD. Desserts are 80 to 90 MAD and batbout bread is 10 MAD. A starter and a main therefore costs about 210 to 400 MAD per person before the service charge and drinks (our sum from the menu). That matches the 160 to 360 MAD rooftop range above, and is two to four times a 50 to 100 MAD medina tagine.

Rooftops and fine dining

Rooftop restaurants near the square charge 160 to 360 MAD for the same dish as the 50 to 100 MAD medina places. Mid-range restaurants run 150 to 400 MAD per person and fine dining or palace restaurants about 500 to 900 MAD. You are paying for the view and service at the rooftops, not for a different tagine.

What a day of eating can cost

Putting the ranges above together, a budget day is a snack meal at 30 to 60 MAD plus a stall dinner at 20 to 80 MAD, so about 50 to 140 MAD per person. A day with a medina tagine at lunch (50 to 100 MAD) and a rooftop dinner (160 to 360 MAD) comes to about 210 to 460 MAD. These are our sums from reported ranges, not quotes, and drinks, bread and service charges come on top.

If you want to try one expensive place, do it once and eat at the stalls and snack places on the other nights. By the same arithmetic, three days with snack lunches, two stall dinners and one rooftop dinner come to about 290 to 700 MAD per person.

Gueliz or the medina

The medina has the atmosphere and the riad courtyards. Gueliz, the new town, has more contemporary restaurants with menus and bills that are easier to read. A good plan is one medina dinner and one Gueliz dinner during a three-day stay.

Tipping and paying

Ten percent is generous, rounding up small change is the local norm. Cash is useful at stalls and small restaurants, while larger places take cards. Ask whether the price board includes bread and water.

Booking

Book rooftop and fine dining places for the evening in busy months, ideally a day ahead. Stalls and snack places do not take reservations.
