3 Days in Marrakech & the Sahara: A Realistic Short-Break Itinerary

3 Days in Marrakech & Sahara: A Realistic Short Break

This is the standard 3-day, 2-night Marrakech to Merzouga tour. Prices come from tour-listing sites and may not be 2026 rates, and driving times differ between operators, so check current price and ask for a day-by-day breakdown.

Typical route

  • Day 1: Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Dades Valley (night).
  • Day 2: Dades and Todra gorges, Tinghir, Tinjdad, Arfoud, Merzouga with a camel ride at sunset (night in a desert camp).
  • Day 3: Sunrise at the dunes, then the long drive back via Rissani, the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate, or via Tazarine and Agdz (some tours choose one or the other).

How long are the drives

Sources disagree, so these are ranges. One operator labels day 1 as a 7-hour drive and day 2 as 5 hours. A listing quotes the one-way Marrakech to Merzouga trip at 9 to 12 hours over about 560 km without stops, and a return version at roughly 1,200 km. Todra Gorge is about an hour from Dades, per one itinerary. We found no reliable per-day kilometre figures. Add the stops, and a long day 1 easily runs from early morning until evening.

The pass in winter

The road over the Tizi n’Tichka (National Road 9) is usually open all year, but snow can fall from November to March and close it until it is cleared. Press reports from January 2026 describe closures on 3 January and 20 January, with the road usually reopening within a day. If you are travelling in winter, ask the operator what happens to the schedule if the pass closes, and leave some slack at the end of the trip. The pass height is quoted as about 2,212 m in one source and 2,260 m in another, so we do not give a precise figure.

Prices

Listings show budget shared trips from about 112 to 119 USD, mid-range from about 171 to 284 USD, and higher-end trips from about 650 to 950 USD per person. Reseller listings for shared tours also span roughly 99 to 300 USD. These are marketplace prices, not an operator’s own tariff. Ask what is included: meals, camp, camel, transport, entrance fees.

Doing it by public transport

You can break the route yourself, though it takes longer. CTM runs four coaches a day from Marrakech to Ouarzazate (00:30, 10:15, 11:30, 16:15), 4 h 15 to 4 h 45, for 115 MAD. From there you still need onward transport to the Dades Valley and to the camp. Supratours has one direct overnight coach from Marrakech to Merzouga, 14:35 to 06:00, 450 MAD. The return leaves Merzouga at 07:30 and arrives at 20:00 (12 h 30), also one a day, checked 24 October 2026. These were fares checked for 4 November 2026.

What to check before you book

Tour guiding is regulated in Morocco. Per an Airbnb help article, guides need a licence from the Ministry of Tourism, and an agency needs its own licence. Sources disagree on the exact issuing body, so ask for the licence number and the company’s registration, and be cautious if an operator claims to be official and cannot give one. Tourist guiding is regulated by law 05-12, which sets the training and approval needed to work as a guide; the Moroccan press reported that 1,299 new guides were authorised after a 2023 regularisation exam. We found no public online register to check a guide’s card, so ask to see the printed card and the agency’s licence. Official Canadian advice is to hire only guides recommended by hotels, travel agencies or the tourist authorities.

The downside: days 1 and 3 are long drives, so you see a lot from the window and have little time on foot.

Who this tour suits

It suits travellers with limited time who accept long hours in a vehicle. With about 7 hours of driving on day 1 and 5 on day 2 in one operator’s plan, that is about 12 hours of driving across the first two days, and the return on day 3 is another long stretch. If you get carsick, dislike fixed schedules or want time on foot, a slower plan with a night in Ouarzazate or an extra day is easier.

A shared group is the cheapest version, and a private driver costs more but lets you stop when you want. Either way, confirm what is included before you pay: meals, the desert camp type, the camel ride, bottled water and entrance fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for Marrakech to Merzouga?

It is the usual minimum, with long drives on days 1 and 3. A 4-day plan leaves more time at the gorges and the dunes.

What does it cost?

Marketplace listings show about 112 to 950 USD per person depending on level. These are not operator tariffs, so ask what is included.

Do I ride a camel?

Most tours include a camel ride on day 2 at sunset.

Where do you sleep?

Night 1 in the Dades Valley and night 2 in a desert camp near Merzouga, per the typical route.

What if the Tizi n’Tichka pass is closed by snow?

Ask the operator what happens to the schedule. Press reports from January 2026 describe closures on 3 and 20 January, with the road reopening within about a day.

Can I do it by public transport?

Partly. CTM runs coaches from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, and Supratours has an overnight coach to Merzouga, as listed above. You still need onward transport to the camp.

How do I check a guide is licensed?

Ask for the printed guide card and the agency licence number. Guiding is regulated by law 05-12, but we found no public online register.

Is Chigaga possible in 3 days?

It usually needs 3 to 4 days, see the Merzouga vs Chigaga guide.
