Marrakech to Essaouira: Day Trip or Overnight? The Honest Answer

Essaouira is a walled Atlantic port about 3 hours from Marrakech by coach. This page covers transport and what fits in a day. For the town itself see the Essaouira guide. Fares below were read on the operators’ booking sites for 4 November 2026 (1 adult) and are “from” prices, so check current price for your date.
Coach options
| Operator | Departures | Journey | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supratours | 07:30, 09:00, 10:30, 12:00, 15:00, 17:00 | 3 h 00 | 100 MAD (125 MAD on the 09:00) |
| CTM | 08:30 (only one found) | 3 h 00 | 105 MAD |
| Markoub listing (aggregator) | not shown | 2 h 30 to 2 h 45 | 60 MAD cheapest, checked 2026-10-24 |
Supratours is the frequent option, six coaches a day, and the cheapest of the two official operators. CTM had a single departure on the date we checked. The 60 MAD figure on markoub.ma is a booking-site listing that does not say which operator runs the trip, so treat it as a lower bound for smaller companies and confirm before you rely on it. Rough Guides recommends booking ahead in peak season. Departures are from Marrakech’s bus station or CTM offices in Gueliz, per one guide.

Other ways to go
A day tour from Marrakech runs about 10 to 12 hours round trip and is listed from about 15 to 140 USD per adult depending on the operator, guide and private or shared transport. Tours often stop at an argan oil cooperative and at roadside goat trees on the way. Lunch is usually not included, one tour lists about 12 to 13 EUR paid locally. A rental car or private driver gives the most flexibility and lets you leave when the light is good.

What fits in a day
Tours typically cover the Skala du Port with its ramparts and old cannons, the whitewashed medina with gates such as Bab Sbaa, Bab Marrakech and Bab Doukkala, the woodwork and silver workshops, and the fishing port, where you can see the catch and eat grilled fish. Ramparts access near the port is charged, one listing says 60 MAD, while the far end has no fee. Check the current fee on site. We could not find reliable per-dish grill prices, so look at the board before you order.

Can you do it in a day?
Technically yes, but with roughly 6 hours of travel you get only a few hours in town. On the date we checked, Supratours ran six coaches from Essaouira back to Marrakech (07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30 and 16:00), at 100 MAD except the 16:00 at 125 MAD. The downside: the last one leaves at 16:00, so a day trip leaves you under six hours in town. Staying one night works better, because the evening light on the ramparts and the port is easier to enjoy without watching the clock.
Planning the day by coach
- Take the 07:30 Supratours so you arrive around 10:30.
- Walk the Skala and ramparts first, while it is cooler.
- Eat at the port, ask prices before you order.
- Leave time for the medina lanes and workshops.
- Confirm the return coach before you sit down to dinner.
The round trip in numbers
| Plan | Fares | Time in town | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip, Supratours 07:30 out, 16:00 back | 100 MAD out, 125 MAD back (the 16:00) = 225 MAD | about 5 h 30 (arrive 10:30, leave 16:00) | Our sum from the published times |
| Day trip, Supratours 07:30 out, 15:30 back | 100 + 100 = 200 MAD | about 5 hours | Check the 15:30 on the day |
| One night in Essaouira | 200 to 225 MAD return in fares | from arrival to the next afternoon | Easier on the light and the clock |
| Shared day tour | about 15 to 140 USD per adult | 10 to 12 hours round trip | Lunch usually extra |
The coach fares are the same whichever day plan you pick, so the real choice is time: about 5 to 5.5 hours in town on a day trip against a full evening and morning with a night. Hotel prices are not given here because we found no official source.
What the town is
UNESCO inscribed the medina of Essaouira in 2001, describing it as an exceptional late-18th-century fortified town and a major international trading seaport. The Skala du Port ticket on the Ministry of Culture portal is 60 MAD for a foreign adult, 30 MAD for a foreign child (7 to 13), and Moroccans enter free on Fridays. The portal shows generic 9h to 17h hours, so check on the day. Secondary sources describe the Skala de la Ville as free, but the official platform does not list it, so we cannot confirm that.
Arriving by air
Essaouira-Mogador airport has taxis on request. ONDA gives a recommended fare of 150 MAD per ride between the airport and the town, and lists no bus, so budget for the taxi.
Going on from Essaouira
CTM runs Essaouira to Agadir three times a day (14:30, 16:30 and 19:30 for the date we saw, 3 h to 3 h 30, 105 to 110 MAD), so you can continue down the coast instead of returning to Marrakech. Markoub also lists Essaouira to Agadir at 50 MAD and to Taghazout at 50 to 65 MAD, but neither CTM nor Supratours serves Taghazout, so that leg depends on smaller companies and local transport.
Booking tips
- Buy on the operator site or at the station window, and keep the confirmation on your phone.
- Prices rise with demand, so book earlier in peak months.
- Bring a layer, coach air conditioning can be cold.
- Keep your bag with you if you can, and tag the one you store under the coach.
