Sahara Desert Tour: Merzouga vs Erg Chigaga, Which Fits Your Trip?

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) and Erg Chigaga are the two usual Sahara tour bases. Figures come from tour-operator blogs and booking marketplaces, not from one operator’s own price list, so check current price and ask each operator what is included before you pay a deposit.
Merzouga

Merzouga is quoted at about 9 to 10 hours from Marrakech, all on paved roads. The standard 3-day tour is consistent across the listings we checked. Day 1: Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou and the Dades Valley. Day 2: Todra Gorge, then Merzouga, a camel ride at sunset and a night in a desert camp. Day 3: sunrise over the dunes and the long drive back via the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate.
Prices vary a lot. Marketplace listings show roughly 99 to 300 USD per adult for a shared group tour and 225 to 1,100 USD or more for private or luxury versions. A shared 3-day Marrakech tour is also listed at about 100 to 180 EUR. One operator lists a double tent at Merzouga at 60 EUR a night with dinner and breakfast. See the 3-day guide for the route in detail.
The downside: a 3-day tour means two very long driving days for one night in the dunes.
Erg Chigaga

Chigaga is more remote. Guides give 480 to 600 km and 7 to 11 hours from Marrakech via Ouarzazate and Zagora (the sources disagree). The last stretch, about 2 hours, is unpaved and needs a 4×4. One comparison lists shared 3-day tours at 200 to 400 EUR, and an operator’s 4-day tour starts at 285 EUR per person in a group of five, or 940 EUR for a solo traveller. One estimate for a camp-only stay is 600 to 1,200 MAD per person, which is a different scope, so compare quotes line by line.
Which one
| Merzouga | Chigaga | |
|---|---|---|
| Road | Paved | Last ~2 h off-road |
| Typical tour | 3 days | 3 to 4 days |
| Cost | Lower | Higher (4×4, smaller groups) |
| Crowds | More visitors | Fewer visitors |
Chigaga often costs two extra travel days, so it does not fit a short trip. If you only have three days, pick Merzouga and spend the saved time at the camp.
When to go
There is no WMO climate table for Merzouga itself. The nearest official one is Errachidia, and Merzouga is probably slightly more extreme (hotter by day in summer, colder at night in winter). Errachidia averages a high of 39.5 C and a low of 25.8 C in July, against a high of 15.9 C and a low of 2.0 C in January. March to May sit at highs of 22 to 30 C, and October at 26.8 C. October is also the wettest month in the table at 23.7 mm, and September has 5 rain days. Summer camps can be very hot, so ask whether tents have fans or shade.
Month by month in Errachidia
| Month | Average high | Average low |
|---|---|---|
| January | 15.9 C | 2.0 C |
| March | 22.1 C | 8.8 C |
| July | 39.5 C | 25.8 C |
| October | 26.8 C | 14.2 C |
| November | 20.6 C | 7.7 C |
These are the WMO 1991 to 2020 averages for Errachidia, the nearest official station. Pack for the range, since desert nights are cold in winter and summer camps are very hot, so ask whether tents have fans or shade.
Getting there without a tour
You can reach Merzouga by public transport, but it is slow. These were live results checked on 23 October 2026 for 4 November, so check current price and times.
- Supratours, Marrakech to Merzouga: one direct departure at 14:35, arriving at 06:00 the next morning (15 h 25 min), 450 MAD. It drops you in the village itself. The way back leaves Merzouga at 07:30 and arrives in Marrakech at 20:00 (12 h 30), one departure a day (checked 24 October 2026, no price shown).
- CTM, Marrakech to Ouarzazate: four departures (00:30, 10:15, 11:30, 16:15), 4 h 15 min to 4 h 45 min, 115 MAD flat. This is the sensible stop if you want to break the trip.
- CTM, Marrakech to Errachidia: no direct bus. Every option needs one change, takes 11 h 30 min to 18 h 45 min and costs 235 to 485 MAD, so Supratours is the better choice.
- CTM, Fes to Errachidia: one direct night bus at 21:00, arriving 04:20 (7 h 20 min), 180 MAD.
From Errachidia or Merzouga village you still need a camp or guide for the dunes, so book the camp first and ask for pickup.
Safety in the desert

Official Canadian advice for southern Morocco is to hire only official guides recommended by hotels, travel agencies or the tourist authorities, to use 4WD for off-road driving, and to carry drinking water and supplies. Do not follow a stranger who offers a cheaper camp at the bus stop.
What to ask the operator
- Is the camp private or shared?
- Are meals, transfers and the camel ride included?
- What is the group size, and how many hours are you in the car each day?
- Is there a toilet and a shower at the camp, and a heater in winter?
