The Perfect Morocco Itinerary: How to Spend 7–14 Days

ItineraryPublished Last checked 5 min read
Morocco itinerary featuring Marrakech, Chefchaouen, Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert

A route built on the transport we could check, with fares and times from official operator sites (ONCF, CTM, Supratours, checked October 2026 for 4 November 2026). Fares are “from” prices that move with demand, so check current price before you book.

One week

  • Marrakech, 3 nights. The medina of Marrakech has been on the UNESCO list since 1985, and Jemaa el-Fna is separately listed as intangible heritage (2001). Add Ouzoud, Ourika or Essaouira as a day trip.
  • Marrakech to Fes by train, 2 nights. About 7 hours, 14 direct trains each way, 260 MAD in 2nd class and 350 MAD in 1st (see the train guide). The medina of Fes (UNESCO since 1981) is the biggest reason to make the trip.
  • Fes to Chefchaouen by CTM, 1 night. Four departures a day (08:00, 11:00, 12:45, 16:30), 4 h 10 to 4 h 50, flat 145 MAD. Supratours also runs it, but it takes 6 h 32 and costs 255 to 275 MAD, so take CTM.
  • Chefchaouen to Tangier. CTM has five departures, 85 MAD, about 2.5 hours. Supratours is 60 MAD but has only two (06:00 and 16:00).

Transport for the one-week route is 490 MAD for 3 legs (our sum, 2nd class and CTM fares for 4 November 2026), about 44.6 EUR at 10.9953 MAD per EUR. That is fares only: hotels, food, entries and the return from Tangier are extra. The total travel time is our sum of the published journey times.

Ten days

Add the coast and one more city to the week above.

  • Marrakech to Essaouira. Supratours runs six direct coaches (100 to 125 MAD, 3 hours). CTM has one at 08:30 for 105 MAD. The medina of Essaouira has been UNESCO listed since 2001.
  • Essaouira to Agadir or Taghazout if you want surf. Marrakech to Agadir takes about 3.5 hours for 135 to 170 MAD, with 11 Supratours departures a day.
  • Fes to Meknes is the cheapest and most frequent train we found, 34 to 39 minutes for 22 to 35 MAD. It makes an easy half day.
  • Casablanca works as a first or last night, because the train from Casa Voyageurs to Marrakech costs about 120 to 135 MAD in 2nd class and takes under 3 hours. Rabat to Fes is 75 to 105 MAD, about 3 hours.
10-day route Marrakech, Merzouga, Fes, Chefchaouen

Two weeks

The tourism board’s visitmorocco.com suggests two circuits: Imperial Cities (7 days: Marrakesh, Rabat, Fez, Meknes) and a Great Tour of Morocco over two weeks. It has no 10-day circuit, so the plan above is ours. For two weeks, add Rabat and the desert, and fit the legs below.

  • Marrakech to Rabat: a direct train, about 4 hours, 125 to 165 MAD in 2nd class.
  • Rabat to Fes: about 3 hours, 75 to 105 MAD.
  • Tangier to Casablanca: the Al Boraq fast train takes 2 h 17 and costs 190 to 245 MAD in 2nd class, direct.
  • Tangier to Rabat: no direct train. One change, 1 h 39 to 1 h 54, 120 to 150 MAD.
  • Casablanca to Essaouira: CTM, 205 to 220 MAD, 6 to 8 hours, first coach 07:30 and last 16:45, so it is better to go from Marrakech.
  • South of Marrakech: CTM to Zagora is 190 MAD (2 departures), to Taroudant 165 MAD (1 departure) and to Tiznit 170 to 180 MAD (12 departures).

These are fares from the operators’ booking sites for 4 November 2026, and we only saw departures up to midday for some trains, so check the last departure.

Adding the desert

Merzouga is quoted at 9 to 10 hours from Marrakech on paved roads, so a 3-day tour is the minimum. Chigaga needs 3 to 4 days because of the off-road leg. Put the desert at the start or end of the trip, not in the middle, and read the Merzouga vs Chigaga guide before you pay a deposit. If you go alone, Supratours runs one overnight bus, 14:35 to 06:00, for 450 MAD, and another from Fes at 20:30 arriving 06:00 (9 h 30), so you can enter from one city and leave from the other.

Markoub lists cheaper fares on some routes (Marrakech to Ouarzazate 50 MAD, Agadir to Essaouira 50 MAD, against 105 to 110 MAD on CTM) without naming the operator.

Check before you go

Coach and train timetables change, and Marrakech city buses changed operator in December 2025. The ONCF timetable we read for Marrakech to Fes was a works-period grid, so confirm it. Use ctm.ma, supratours.ma and oncf-voyages.ma.

The downside: Fes to Tangier by coach plus the ferry makes for a long last day.
